How To Buy The Right Meal Prep Containers (1080 x 400 px)

Containers are essential for successful and efficient meal prep. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to decide which type will work best for you.

Here are some factors to consider when choosing the right meal prep containers:

Will you be using your containers for freezer storage and/or microwave reheating. Not all containers are designed for these purposes, so choose containers that are compatible with your needs.

Leak-proof containers are essential for preventing spills and messes during transport. Look for containers with secure lids and sealing mechanisms to ensure that your food stays fresh and contained.

Reusable containers are an eco-friendly and cost-effective option for meal prep. Look for containers that are microwave, freezer, fridge, dishwasher safe and can be used multiple times without breaking or deteriorating.

Size and Shape

The size of the container is another important factor to consider. The container should be large enough to fit your meal, but not so large that it takes up unnecessary space in your fridge or bag. It’s also helpful to have containers in various sizes for portion control and variety in your meal prep.

The shape can also affect its functionality. Sectional containers with compartments are great for portion control and separating different foods. Low-profile containers are space-saving and stackable, while mason jars are trendy and versatile.

Before You Purchase Containers Take a Reality Check

Considering how you will use your meal prep containers before you will buy them will save you money, time, and help you maximize the efficiency of your storage space.

Think about who will be using them and how.  Will it be small children, teens, a spouse? Will they be transported or used in the home? Also consider how likely the empty containers are going to be forgotten on the bus, in a friend’s car, or in the office refrigerator.

Also knowing the types of foods that will be eaten from them can help you determine what are your best options.

The one brand that we use is called Ello. They can go from the freezer to fridge, to microwave or oven and are dishwasher safe on the the top rack. They stack easily and the glass is protected by the silicone/rubber wrapper and lid.

We also love that each one is a different color as that allows is to distinguish who’s container is whose or what is inside them without having to open them.

By the way Ello also makes other fantastic products such as stainless steel kids water bottles and these amazing wine glasses. I have purchased both.

Understanding Materials

Meal prep containers are commonly made from materials such as plastic, glass, stainless steel, or silicone. Each material has its pros and cons, so it’s important to choose a material that fits your needs. For example, glass containers are durable, non-toxic, and non-leaching, but they can be heavy and breakable. Plastic containers are lightweight and affordable, but they can contain harmful chemicals that may leach into food. If you decided to use plastic containers for food storage of any kind first and foremost make sure you are selecting food grade containers. We will unpack more about plastic containers later in this article.

Glass: Glass containers are a durable and eco-friendly option for meal prep. They are microwave and dishwasher safe and can also be used for oven cooking. Glass containers are also non-toxic and non-leaching, making them a safe choice for storing food.

Plastic: Plastic containers are a lightweight and affordable option for meal prep. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and are often dishwasher safe. However, some plastic containers may contain harmful chemicals that can leach into food, so it’s important to choose BPA-free options.

Let’s dive a little further into some research on plastic food containers. There is conflicting information provided about plastics and their safety when it comes to food. While many manufactures will boast that their products are BPA free that does not necessarily mean that the item does not leach other chemicals into food when reheating.  What can a consumer do when deciding on plastic food containers?

Looking at the number on the bottom of the container may be a good place to start. Manufacturers of plastics are required to place a number with the recycling logo that discloses information about the components and processing of the materials used in making the product. According to the Association of Nutrition and Dietetics the safest choices are 1, 2, 4, and 5

Even when using the safest plastics possible, the rule of thumb in our house is we do not allow these containers in the microwave. Reheating or exposing plastics over time to heated conditions may encourage leaching of the materials.

When placing into the dishwasher the top rack is often recommended by the manufacturers for a reason and some people prefer to avoid the high heat exposure all together and simply hand wash their plastic items.

The Functional Use Of Meal Prep Containers

Freezable and Non-freezable
Some meal prep containers are designed to be freezable, while others are not. Freezable containers are a great option for preparing meals in advance and storing them in the freezer until needed.

From Freezer to Microwave/Oven
Some meal prep containers are designed to be used in both the freezer and microwave, making them a convenient option for reheating pre-made meals.

Some meal prep containers are oven-safe, allowing you to prepare meals in advance and then cook them in the oven when you’re ready to eat.

Vacuum Seal
Vacuum-seal machines and their containers are a great option for keeping food fresh for longer periods of time. They work by removing air from the container, which helps to prevent oxidation and spoilage. Often made from materials such as plastic or glass they can be used for a variety of purposes such as storing leftovers or marinating meat. They are also a great option for meal prep as they can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge or freezer for later use.

Dry Storage Containers
Dry storage containers are a popular option for storing dry goods such as grains, nuts, and seeds. They are often made from materials such as plastic or glass and can be stacked for easy storage.

Overall, the type of meal prep container you choose will depend on your personal preferences and needs, but there are many options available to help make meal prep easier and more convenient.
