Homemade Butter

I used to think making delicious, creamy butter was difficult. You can make this in under 20 minutes with no cooking required. I show you how to let your Kitchen Aid mixer do all the work. It makes the process so much easier. I don't know how those poor Amish women do it, churning butter by hand is a tedious task.

Equipment

  • 1 Kitchen Aid Mixer
  • 1 Cheesecloth
  • 1 Spatula
  • Plastic Wrap

Ingredients

  • 1 Qt Heavy Cream
  • 1 Tsp Sea Salt
  • Ice Cubes

Instructions

  • Gather the ingredients
  • Place the Whisk attachment onto the mixer
  • Pour the entire quart of cream into the mixing bowl that comes with the Kitchen Aid
    1 Qt Heavy Cream
  • Wrap the mixer with plastic wrap, making sure to leave a slight gap for the switches and the air vent. (You will be adjusting the speed and removing the bowl.) Your mixer may not work properly if you do not allow air to escape from the vent.
  • Start on lower speeds and then increase and keep at a high speed until you pass the whip cream stage of mixing.
  • Slowly decrease to low as you hear the cream sloshing and see the butter separate from the buttermilk
  • Congratulate yourself you have just made butter- There are just a few more steps. Lift the mixer and leave the butter that is now stuck inside the Whisk. Pour the buttermilk from the bowl into a jar- do not throw it away as this is liquid gold in pancakes, cakes, and biscuits.
  • Add the teaspoon of salt to the butter in the whisk and turn the mixer on to mix it all in.
    1 Tsp Sea Salt
  • Rinse the cheesecloth and set it in a bowl
  • Place the salted butter into the cheesecloth
  • Fill a bowl with ice cubes and water
    Ice Cubes
  • Wrap the butter inside the cheesecloth and dip it into the ice water
  • Gently squeeze the butter and you will see some more buttermilk escape this is the purpose of washing to remove any excess buttermilk. This way you can save the butter in the refrigerator without it turning rancid.
  • You now can place the butter in your container of choice and serve or refrigerate.

Notes

Look at how much buttermilk you get from this process
Shape your butter in a mold for festive occasions  I did this one for Thanksgiving .
You can mix honey or herbs to add a special touch to your butter!
You can even make little pads for smaller gatherings
